Art Classes (for Children)

Art of Nature

Join us as we explore the many treasures Mother Nature has cast in our paths this season. With a little imagination, we will transform ordinary nature into extraordinary art! We will transform river smooth rocks into painted sculptures, create stick snakes to ward off any unwanted guests in your garden, use “sticks and stones” to creative rustic picture frames, turn our findings into fun nature faces, and create whimsical mobiles that include some treats for our fine-feathered friends.

Art Starts!

All children are artists, and they love to paint! In this class, your toddler will be introduced to a variety of materials such as fingerpaint, watercolors, and tempera paint. Material exploration can begin early and is the foundation for creativity. Children also learn by doing. Art Starts will allow your child to learn while having hands-on fun!

Painting is a language that allows children to express their ideas and feelings, and I support each child’s need to experiment when making art. Trial and error are necessary in all attempts at discovery and creativity. Therefore, art and the creative process can get a little messy. Please dress your young artist for the part.

This art class will stretch your child’s creativity as he/she explores a variety of media, from painting and printmaking to paper machier, collage, decoupage and more - the possibilities are endless! Paint and Play Ceramics

In this class, students will learn various painting and glazing techniques on a variety of pre-formed ceramics pieces. Instructors from Paint and Play, a Paint-Your-Own Ceramics business with three locations throughout Richmond, host this unique class.

Young Rembrandts “Master”ing Art

Do you love art? Would you like to improve your drawing skills? From Grandma Moses to Vincent Van Gogh, this new program will inspire your child’s love of drawing and art. These fun, educational lessons will teach your child about famous artists and famous works of art. Each week we will study and learn about master artists and their artistic style. Students will practice new art tricks and techniques, will expand their art vocabulary and will improve their knowledge of art movements from around the world. Young Rembrandts Drawing Class

As your child prepares for Kindergarten we understand the critical skills that they must possess in order to be successful. Our junior kindergarten drawing classes make learning and growing fun! Learning at this age requires repetition and practice and our age-appropriate lessons, and step-by-step process provides this each week. Not only will your child improve their creative and artistic skill, they will also improve fine motor, visual awareness, ability to sit in a classroom and to follow adult directed tasks. Art Appreciation: Modern Art

The Development of Modern Painting. The story of Modern Art is a visual record of significant changes and upheavals in Western Civilization–from the French Revolution to World War II, with many scientific and social advancements in between. During eight weeks of beautiful images, we will see how and why painting styles, and the artworld’s notion of painting as a whole, underwent an “extreme makeover” over the course of a century. From Neoclassicism, through the Impressionists, to Jackson Pollock, you will be very ‘in the know’ at your next museum or gallery visit!

Card Making

Have you ever wanted to make your own cards, party favors or invitations? In this fun class for beginning stampers, you will learn basic stamping techniques and how to use some of the many tools available to help you expand your creativity. Then you will learn to “enhance” your cards and projects with a variety of accessories and techniques. You will also learn how to use stamps to create beautiful and fun gifts and gift packages for your family and friends.

This class for beginners will cover pinch pots, slab building and coil building. You’ll learn how to move the clay, how to join one piece to another, and how to finish a piece through scraping, smoothing, even texturing. Potter will provide hands on demonstrations and instruction as you build pinch pots into wall pockets, join half rounds to makes balls (fruit, etc.), and make coil building pieces into sculpture or tall pots - the possibilities are endless! All supplies plus glazes, firing, etc. are included in cost.

Would you like make something that will motivate and inspire you? This oversized clipboard is the ideal canvas to display your creativity and craft your muse. Mosaics and Painting Projects

Bring out your inner artist and create some fabulous pieces. In this 2-hour class you will complete a mosaic project, paint a small floorcloth and paint a project on fabric (a pillow, a pair of jeans, whatever!). You will learn proper techniques and work at your own pace. If you decide you want to focus on one project in particular, that’s fine! You’ll be amazed at what you can accomplish with a little guidance. Price includes supplies.

Scrapbooking: Finish Line

Finish Line Scrapbooking will increase your productivity and give you a whole new way to scrapbook! It is a process created by Stacey Julian, founding partner of Big Picture Scrapbooking and founding editor of Simple Scrapbooks magazine. Active Fun Learning Letters

This is THE class for your active pre-K child! Most preschools educate children using visual/auditory methods…this class will reinforce learning through kinesthetic and tactile teaching methods. Your child will learn letters and numbers through multi-sensory techniques, such as digging through the sand to find the right letter, shaping letters out of dough, station learning, and more. Each session will focus on different letters and numbers.

Babysitting

The Babysitter’s Training Course from the American Red Cross will teach you everything you need to be a great babysitter. This fun, interactive course teaches first aid and safety skills so you can prevent and respond to emergencies. And, as a Red Cross-trained babysitter, you’ll gain confidence and valuable employment skills to impress parents! There will be approx. a one-hour break for lunch. Participants will earn an Am. Red Cross Babysitting certificate to show prospective parents.
Taught by American Red Cross certified instructors. We will put together a class just for your group of 8-10 children, or take the next class on our schedule.

The Musikgarten classes offered at Kaarina’s Musikgarten are designed to nurture the child’s music aptitude by engaging children and their families in singing and movement activities which help attune the ear, refine the voice, and develop a rhythmic body through which music can be expressed. Additionally, instrumental activities are part of the program, ranging from playing simple rhythm instruments such as sticks and drums for babies and toddlers to playing keyboards for older children.

Hooked on Learning

pre-kindergarten aged children

We are thrilled to be the host of this pilot program being held in only 5-10 cities nationally. Building upon the values of the emmy-award winning PBS program Reading Rainbow, the class includes take home materials as well as fabulous instruction to develop a love of learning and reading in pre-kindergarten aged children. Curriculum will focus on pre-phonics and phonics skills (learning the alphabet, groups of sounds, etc.) and will include games, music (esp. letter specific songs), books, etc. This one-hour class will meet one time per week for seven weeks at 2:15pm (time may be moved to 3:15pm per customer requests). Kids Make the News

This class is available for a limited time! Ever wondered what it takes to put together a multimedia story? Find out in this hands-on boot camp in which students will produce an online news project. Kids interested in writing, video and photography will decide the project, research and write the stories, shoot video, take pictures and have input on the project’s web design. Whether working with words, photos, video or audio, students will learn diverse storytelling techniques. Digital camera w/ video capabilities is required (mom, your child can teach you how to use yours!).

Do you like to act? Do you like to put on plays? Do you want to be on stage? Then, this is the class for you! Lively exercises turn learning the principals of acting into fun and games. Be part of our show and take center stage in this light-hearted intro to drama.

Personal Chef and Mom Shauna Brown will delight your preschooler with safe, fun projects in the kitchen to instill a love of cooking at an early age. Each week will feature something new, from nursery rhymes to dance and music videos to learning basic rhythm patterns – children will even make their own musical instruments!

No Simon Cowell in this class! No solos either (unless you want to!). You’ll learn the basics, such as proper breathing techniques, and have fun learning to sing hip current tunes (as well as some classics) from many different genres. Join Kathy, lead singer of the band “4 to 1”, for some awesome singing…you might even learn a dance step or two!

Music Therapy

special needs children (hearing impairments, autism, or other developmental disabilities)

This small class of 4 – 5 kids will be taught in a very structured environment. Music and movement will be customized to meet the needs of each child and help him excel at his own pace. Certified Music Therapist Lorrie Zampetti will meet with you individually prior to the first class to determine if this is an appropriate fit for your child. Ocean Encounters

This unique series of classes specializes in interactive classroom presentations for pre-schoolers to middle schoolers. Marine Biologist Jamie Cosby’s programs are “sea education at its best” - she will introduce children to horseshoe crabs, snails, urchins, spider/hermit/stone crabs, nurse sharks, pufferfish, and so many more creatures under the sea! She makes her classes fun and interactive using role-playing, costumes and props to engage participants in learning concepts about the ocean creatures and the waters in which they dwell. Children will have an opportunity to touch and feel some of the creatures and may leave the class with a souvenir shark’s tooth! *Ms. Cosby is selling her business so we will not be able to offer these classes during Summer/Fall 2008. Need some time and space to sit down and get them all organized once and for all? This class will help you “get it together” and get in control of your photographs! Your class fee of $ 40 will include your own “Power Sort Box”, that will hold 2,400 photos, up to a 5×7 size (plus room in the lid for oversized portraits). It has 12 separate removable compartments, movable/reusable dividers, a detachable lid…..and is photo safe! Come and get away from the phone ringing, the drier buzzing, and the “MOOOOM” or “DAAAAD” calls at your house, and other disruptions. Silver Jewelry Making-Byzantine Chain Maille Bracelet

Learn the fundamentals of interlocking jump rings to make a bracelet. This class will focus on the byzantine chain weave (a beginner chain maille weave). Once mastered, we will explore ways to use the Byzantine segments to create beautiful jewelry! By the end of class you will be wearing a sterling silver (92.5%) bracelet that you created. All you need to bring to class is good eyesight and two pair of flat nosed pliers (instructor will provide specific direction prior to class). All silver jump rings and lobster clasp a included in materials cost. The sterling silver bracelet retails for $150-200 - what a great gift for yourself or others!

Womens Self Defense

This Self-Defense class specifically geared to women’s needs and concerns. It will be taught using Judo and Brazilian Jiu Jitsu techniques. Andrew Smith is an accomplished Judo black belt and a Brazilian Jiu Jitsu brown belt. Brazilian Jiu Jitsu focuses on ground fighting techniques. The ground is typically the position where women are the most vulnerable. Rebekah Carrow, who will also be teaching, has been studying martial arts since age 8, and is a black belt in Okinawan Kempo and a blue belt in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. Rebekah is certified in women-specific self-defense systems and is employed by the Safe Harbor Domestic Abuse Shelter. The class will be open to women and girls that are ages 12 and up.

Art of Nature Workshop

Art Camps with Gretchen Marr

Following is a brief outline of the fun art projects to be explored by various age groups through Gretchen’s camps and classes.
5-6 year olds Art Camp: Master artists will be our source of inspiration for each child’s unique piece of artwork: Picasso (self portraits), Rousseau (drawing, collage and perhaps printmaking if time allows), Monet (crayon resist), and Kandinsky (painting without brushes).
7-9 year olds Art Camp: We will explore drawing exercises to learn how to draw animals. We will also use Michelangelo and Seurat (pointillism) as a source of inspiration with this group… and maybe even introduce one-point perspective drawing!
10-12 and 11-14 year olds Art Camps and Classes: We will do more experimentation with drawing; still life, figure, landscape, drawing from life vs. from a photograph, applying value, linear perspective, etc. In addition to pencil, students may also be using chalk pastel, oil pastel, and charcoal.

Guitar Lessons - Beginner

This class provides an introduction to the guitar. Students learn simple music notation and tablature that will teach rhythms and pitches on the guitar. We practice warm-up exercises to strengthen young hands. Students will also have fun with some rock ‘n’ roll riffs and basic chords. Each student must be willing to practice at home and have a guitar (either electric or acoustic..try to find one not TOO small and not too BIG! Join us for a week of fun with amazing robots! In this week of camp, learn about the uses of robots in our world and spend time experimenting with super cool red-hot robots. Experiment with sound sensing robots, line-tracking robots, amphibious robots and robots that can even play soccer! Soccer Camp at Fox Hall Soccer Fields

Join Coach Gianni Baldini for a one week camp of concentrated instruction on the basics of soccer technique. There will be special sessions for goalkeepers if needed. Participants will work in groups according to age. Instruction ranges from beginning to advanced. We will also work on balance, coordination and running correctly. Instructors are chosen because of their knowledge of soccer and their ability to relate to younger players. Carful and frequent demonstrations by coaches help the players of that age remember the right executions. Our philosophy is to teach soccer without pressure and to have fun.
